Lycian Way Antalya
The Lycian Way is a hiking trail stretching from Fethiye in southwestern Turkey to Antalya, covering a distance of approximately 520 kilometers. It connects Fethiye to Antalya along the Lycian coast. Taking around 29 days to complete, the Lycian Way is Turkey’s first long-distance hiking route.
Originally used by the Lycians for trade, military, human, and animal transportation, the route was designed in 1989 by Kate Clow, a British/Turkish amateur historian living in Turkey. It was officially opened in 1999, covering 509 kilometers. As of 2023, the Lycian Way has been extended to approximately 760 kilometers. The trail starts from Hisarönü near Ovacık in Fethiye and ends in Geyikbayırı, about 20 kilometers from Antalya. The route is marked with red and white trail signs.
The trail is named after the ancient Lycian civilization that thrived along the southern coast of Anatolia. The Lycians had their own unique language and culture. The region was home to strategically located cities such as Xanthos, Patara, Olympos, and Phaselis. Throughout history, the Lycians were influenced by various civilizations, including the Greeks, Persians, and Romans. These cultural influences can be seen in the artistic works, architecture, and inscriptions found in the ruins of Lycian cities.
The region experiences a Mediterranean climate with hot and dry summers and mild winters. The best season for hiking is spring. The Lycian Way has hosted an international ultramarathon event, the Lycian Way Ultramarathon, covering a route of approximately 220 kilometers from Antalya to Ölüdeniz (Fethiye), which takes around six days to complete.
While walking along this extraordinary trail with breathtaking views of the Mediterranean, you will be accompanied by majestic mountains and lush green trees. This hiking route offers a unique opportunity to witness the natural beauty of the Mediterranean and experience its captivating charm.
There are several important rules to keep in mind while hiking the Lycian Way. Be cautious of wildlife, including scorpions and insects. Always keep your tent and backpack zippers closed securely. It is advisable to check your shoes before putting them on.
As you hike and exert yourself, your body loses sodium and becomes dehydrated. Make sure to drink enough water and sports drinks. Avoid shortcuts and follow the marked trail signs to stay on the correct path and avoid getting lost.
The Lycian Way consists of 31 stages from east to west, and some parts of the trail are suitable for mountain biking. If you plan to sleep during your journey, you will need camping gear such as a tent, hiking boots, socks, pants, shirts, a raincoat, and sunglasses. If you want to take a break and enjoy the water, bringing a swimsuit is also recommended.
