Alanya Castle Antalya
Alanya Castle is one of the symbols representing Alanya, located in the Alanya district of Antalya. Situated in the south of Turkey, on the shores of the Mediterranean, Alanya Castle is a historical building complex. It is located on a peninsula rising approximately 250 meters above the sea. The castle has a long history dating back to the Hellenistic period, but its current appearance was established in the 13th century, in 1221, during the Seljuk period under the rule of Seljuk Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat. Strategically positioned, Alanya Castle has been under the control of various powers such as the Seljuks, Karamanoğulları, and the Ottoman Empire.
Alanya Castle has a total wall length of 6.5 kilometers, featuring 140 towers and nearly 400 cisterns. The castle consists of three main sections: the Inner Castle, the Middle Castle, and the Outer Castle. The Inner Castle is the highest point within the castle complex and contains palace ruins, warehouses, cisterns, and structures from the Seljuk period. The Outer Castle serves as a civilian area with residences, mosques, and baths along the walls. The Middle Castle was used for military purposes. This incredibly magnificent structure is highly recommended to visit when in Alanya.
Alanya Castle offers an extraordinary view and a historical atmosphere that showcases the uniqueness of our culture. As soon as you step into the castle, you are greeted with a stunning view of the Mediterranean Sea. Watching the sunset from the castle’s towers provides an unforgettable experience. While visiting Alanya Castle, you will also have the chance to explore the Red Tower, which was built during the Seljuk period and has become a symbol of the city. Additionally, Alanya Shipyard, one of the best-preserved Seljuk shipyards in the Mediterranean, offers visitors the opportunity to experience the maritime trade and naval history of the past.
