The Clock Tower Antalya
The Clock Tower, located in the heart of the city, is one of Antalya's most iconic landmarks. Situated in the Muratpaşa district at Cumhuriyet Square, it holds a rich history. The tower was originally built in the 9th century during the Byzantine period on a pentagonal bastion with a square plan. In 1901, it was restored and transformed into a clock tower by Grand Vizier Küçük Sait Pasha in honor of Sultan Abdulhamid II. The tower, with its square plan, rises above the outer walls. It features a clock on each of its four facades, with a bell placed at the top. The tower stands 14 meters high from the ground and 8 meters above the walls. Initially topped with a dome, it lost this feature in the 1940s; however, a replica dome was added during renovation works in 2022. With its Ottoman architecture and unique design, the tower has become a popular attraction for tourists exploring the city's old town.
The tower is intricately designed with Arabic numerals on its clock faces and elements reflecting cultural heritage. Many visitors can often be seen taking photographs, drawn by its renowned reputation. If you happen to visit after dark, you will witness the tower beautifully illuminated. Antalya Clock Tower serves as a symbol of the city. Surrounded by cobbled narrow streets and historic buildings, the Clock Tower enhances the charm of Kaleiçi, making it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Antalya. As a lasting testament to the city's history, it continues to captivate both locals and tourists with its timeless beauty.
One of the reasons it is so important to the people of Antalya is its central location, making it a popular meeting point for locals.
