Antalya Necropolis Museum
The Antalya Necropolis Museum was established in 2008 when ancient tombs were discovered during the foundation excavation for the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality business center construction in the area known as Eastern Garage in the city center. Following this discovery, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism initiated rescue excavations. As a result of three years of excavation work, nearly 1,000 different types of tombs, numerous historical artifacts, and skeletons were unearthed.
The museum is built on a Roman necropolis (cemetery area) dating back to the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. Necropolises were large cemetery areas built outside ancient cities, and the excavations in this region have brought to light sarcophagi, tombstones, skeletons, and burial gifts. This museum provides a unique opportunity to understand the funeral rituals and burial traditions of Antalya during the Roman and Byzantine periods.
When you visit the Antalya Necropolis Museum, you can observe the following artifacts. The most striking sections of the museum include Roman-era decorated sarcophagi and tombstones. Ceramic vessels, jewelry, and daily-use objects that were placed alongside the dead in ancient times are exhibited. Human skeletons unearthed during grave excavations and scientific studies conducted on them are displayed for visitors. Additionally, visuals and digital presentations provide detailed information about ancient death rituals and belief systems.
