Aperlai Ancient City Antalya

Aperlai, first emerging on Lycian inscriptions, was recognized on account of its historical significance as one of the important cities of the Lycian League. Frequently mentioned in ancient Lycian inscriptions, the city first flourished around this era and later became an important port and trade center during the Roman Empire. Located strategically along one of the busiest Mediterranean trade routes, Aperlai enjoyed considerable prosperity.

Today, among its most striking surviving features are the impressive defensive city walls, fortified structures, and numerous Lycian sarcophagi and rock tombs scattered around the area. These tombs provide valuable insights into the distinctive burial customs of the Lycian civilization.

One of Aperlai’s most remarkable and fascinating features is that a portion of its ruins lies submerged underwater due to ancient rising sea levels. Structures beneath the waterline attract diving enthusiasts, offering them a unique chance to explore history beneath the sea.
