Arykanda Ancient City Antalya
Dating back to the 5th century BC, Arykanda is one of the oldest cities of Lycia. Due to its strategic location, the city had a strong defense system and served as an important settlement during the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods. Like other Lycian cities, Arykanda was governed by a people devoted to their freedom but eventually came under Roman influence.
This fascinating ancient city is home to numerous historical structures. The theater, located at the highest point of the city, offers a breathtaking view of the valley and bears traces of the Hellenistic period. One of the most remarkable structures, the stadium, was used during the Roman era for gladiator fights and athletic competitions.
The agora, one of Lycia’s trade and administrative centers, provides insight into the social life of the ancient period. The Roman-era bath complex reveals important details about the daily lives of the people of Arykanda. Outside the ancient city, Lycian-style rock tombs reflect Arykanda’s beliefs about the afterlife.
Nestled among the mountains, Arykanda offers a unique experience with its combination of historical atmosphere and natural beauty. Since it is a lesser-known ancient city, Arykanda allows for a peaceful exploration away from large tourist crowds. Due to its high location, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views overlooking the Lycian valleys.
