Aya Yorgi Church Antalya
Aya Yorgi Church was built in 1863 as a place of worship for the Greek Orthodox community in Antalya. However, the history of this church goes back even further. An older church once stood on this site, but after its destruction, Aya Yorgi Church was constructed in its place.
Aya Yorgi (Saint George) is an important saint in Christian history. According to legend, he killed a dragon with his spear to protect the people. Due to this story, some sections of the church feature reliefs depicting Saint George on horseback with a spear in his hand.
In 1923, after the Turkish-Greek population exchange, the Greek population of Antalya migrated to Greece. As a result, the church lost its congregation and was later used as a storage facility, eventually falling into ruin. In 1991, it was restored by the Suna & İnan Kıraç Foundation, giving it its current form.
Today, the church functions as part of the Kaleiçi Museum. It hosts art exhibitions, cultural events, and various organizations. If you enjoy art and culture, make sure to visit the exhibitions inside this historic church!
