Church of Saint Nicholas Antalya
The Church of Saint Nicholas, located in the Demre district of Antalya, is both a sacred site for the Christian world and a fascinating structure filled with history and legends. Attracting tourists from all over the world, this church is known as the place where Saint Nicholas (Santa Claus) lived and served as a bishop.
Saint Nicholas was a Christian saint who is believed to have lived between 270-343 AD. Known for his generosity and love for children, he later became the inspiration for the modern Santa Claus figure.
Built in the 4th century AD, this church was constructed to honor him after his death. It became an important pilgrimage center during the Middle Ages and holds great significance in both Orthodox and Catholic Christianity.
Restored multiple times over the centuries, the church bears traces of Byzantine and Seljuk periods. Its mosaic floors, frescoes, and intricate stonework take visitors on a journey through history.
The floor of the church is still covered with well-preserved mosaics. The ceiling and walls are decorated with frescoes depicting the life of Saint Nicholas. Inside the church, there is a sarcophagus believed to be the tomb of Saint Nicholas. However, his remains were taken to Bari, Italy, in the 11th century.
