Colybrassus Ancient City Antalya
Mentioned by the ancient geographer Claudius Ptolemy as an important city center, Colybrassus hosted the Legion Pontica, a Roman military unit founded by Emperor Julius Caesar in 113 BC. During the Byzantine period, the city became a bishopric center and was named after its patron saint, Hagia Sophia. In 1199, after the Byzantine Empire lost control of Anatolia, the city came under the ownership of Armenian prince Kervard and was referred to as "Surp Sope."
While exploring this fascinating ancient city, you will experience a unique blend of history and nature. One of the must-see structures in Colybrassus is the Ancient Theater, a well-preserved yet small structure that once served as a public gathering and entertainment venue.
Visitors can also see rock-cut tombs and sarcophagi from the Roman period. Some tomb inscriptions found in the area are of particular interest. The Colonnaded Street, believed to be the city's main avenue, still has standing column remnants. Walking along this road, you can imagine the people of Colybrassus strolling its streets thousands of years ago.
The city also features the remains of a Roman temple and stone inscriptions, providing valuable insights into Colybrassus’ past.
