Elmalı Museum Antalya
Elmalı Museum was opened to visitors in 2011 after the restoration of an old government building. Located in the Elmalı district of Antalya, this museum stands out particularly for its artifacts from the Lycian period. Since Elmalı was one of the key centers of Lycian civilization in history, many valuable artifacts have been unearthed during excavations in this region.
The museum houses a vast collection spanning from the Late Chalcolithic Age (3000 BC) to the Roman Period. It exhibits ancient tombs, statues, ceramic vessels, and the famous Elmalı Coins, among many other significant artifacts.
When you visit Elmalı Museum, you can explore the Karataş-Semayük and Bağbaşı Excavation Finds. Excavations in the Elmalı region have revealed artifacts from the Late Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age. The museum displays ceramics, stone tools, and burial objects from this period. One of the most remarkable exhibits is three large pithos tombs unearthed in the Karataş-Semayük Necropolis, providing valuable insights into ancient burial customs.
Elmalı and its surroundings are rich in Lydian and Lycian tumuli. The museum has faithfully reconstructed the burial chambers of the Karaburun and Kızılbel Tumuli on a 1:1 scale, offering visitors a close-up view of ancient tomb architecture.
Elmalı is home to one of the largest ancient coin hoards in history! The Elmalı Hoard was discovered in 1984 and contained approximately 1,900 ancient coins. The museum showcases coins from Lycian city-states, as well as rare Persian and Roman period coins, providing significant insights into the economy of the ancient world.
