Iotape (Aytap) Ancient City Antalya

The history of Aytap dates back to the Roman Empire. The city was founded in honor of Queen Iotape by King Antiochus IV of Commagene, who ruled between 38-72 AD. During the Roman period, the ancient city developed into a port city and had the privilege of minting its own coins from the reign of Emperor Trajan to Emperor Valerian.

Today, the ruins of this ancient city include a harbor street, a temple, a bathhouse, and a necropolis. The acropolis, located at the highest point of the city, offers an impressive view for history enthusiasts.

The remains of a basilica and a church in the city bear traces of the Byzantine period, while the surviving stone structures in the ancient harbor area continue to reflect the past. Walking along the coastline, you can experience a journey through time in a history-filled atmosphere.

In the bay to the east of the acropolis, there are remains of a rectangular-plan, three-nave basilica and a small single-nave church dedicated to Hagios Georgios Stratelates. Additionally, a bath structure and its accompanying sewer system have been preserved to this day.
