Karatay Madrasa Antalya
Located in Antalya’s historic Kaleiçi (Old Town) district, Karatay Madrasa is an important Seljuk-era structure. It was built in 1250 by Celaleddin Karatay, one of the prominent statesmen of the period. Over time, the structure has been referred to by various names, including Karatay Mosque, Karatay Masjid, and Karadayı Mosque.
The madrasa is built on a rectangular plan oriented east-west, featuring a two-iwan design with an open courtyard. One of its most remarkable elements is the ornate western portal, which showcases the fine stone craftsmanship of the Seljuks. Above the portal, an Arabic inscription provides details about the construction date and the patron of the madrasa.
Today, Karatay Madrasa has been restored by the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality and now serves as a monument museum, hosting cultural events and exhibitions. Visitors can experience the historical atmosphere of the madrasa while exploring various exhibitions and cultural activities.
