Kitanaura Ancient City Antalya

Kitanaura Ancient City is an important settlement located at the intersection of Lycian and Pisidian cultures. The city's name appears in ancient inscriptions and coins. "Kitanaura" is a Lycian name, and according to some sources, it means "windy valley."

Kitanaura is believed to have been inhabited since the 4th century BC. After its initial discovery, significant remains from the Roman period were found. The city's walls, temple areas, cisterns, and necropolis are among the important ruins that have survived to this day.

One of the notable structures in the city is the Theatre. A small ancient theatre ruin here suggests a developed social life within the settlement. The acropolis, surrounded by walls, is also located here. The high location of the city emphasizes the importance of the fortifications built for defense purposes. Lastly, there are Lycian and Roman-period rock tombs.

Kitanaura Ancient City offers significant clues about the mythological and religious structure of Lycia. Inscriptions and writings found in the area indicate that the city had a certain status within the Lycian Federation. It is also believed to have been a center associated with the Apollo cult.

The Lycian people were skilled in artistic activities such as woodwork, stone carving, and pottery. Traces of these crafts have also been found in Kitanaura. Especially the reliefs on the tombstones reflect the unique and detailed craftsmanship of Lycian art.
