Magydos Ancient City Antalya

Antalya is an open-air museum, rich in historical heritage and ancient cities. While exploring famous sites like Aspendos, Perge, and Termessos, don’t forget about Magydos, an important but lesser-known ancient port city!

Before the foundation of Attaleia (modern-day Antalya), Magydos was a key port city in a strategic location along trade routes. The city thrived during the Roman Empire and was one of the few cities privileged to mint its own coins. Magydos coins were in circulation from the reign of Emperor Domitian to Emperor Gallienus. The city continued to exist during the Byzantine period and was recognized as a bishopric center. However, in the 7th century AD, it lost its significance due to Arab raids and was eventually abandoned.

Today in Magydos, visitors can see a man-made harbor, vaulted structures of an ancient bathhouse, water channels, and remnants of buildings made from rubble stones. However, some remains of the ancient city are located within the Karpuzkaldıran Military Recreation Facility, making a full exploration impossible.

Address: Güzeloba Neighborhood, Muratpaşa/Antalya
