Myra Ancient City and Lycian Civilizations Museum Antalya

The historic district of Demre in Antalya, under the warm Mediterranean sun, is home to two of the most fascinating sites of the ancient world: Myra Ancient City and the Lycian Civilizations Museum (Andriake Archaeological Site). Myra, one of the most significant cities of Lycia, and its port city Andriake continue to captivate history enthusiasts to this day.

Myra was one of the six most powerful cities of the Lycian League, holding a prominent place in history. One of its most striking features is the Lycian-style rock-cut tombs, carved into the cliffs. These imposing tombs showcase the artistic and architectural genius of ancient times, leaving a lasting impression on visitors.

However, Myra is not just about the tombs! The city also boasts a Roman-era theater, one of the largest and best-preserved ancient theaters in the region. This magnificent structure, where festivals, theatrical performances, and gladiator battles were once held, allows visitors to experience the enchanting atmosphere of antiquity.

The port of ancient Myra, Andriake, was a major commercial hub throughout history. Today, it houses the Lycian Civilizations Museum, where visitors can explore the rich heritage of the Lycian civilization.

The museum is located within the Granarium (Great Grain Storage), built in AD 129. This massive structure, once used for grain trade, has been transformed into a museum showcasing artifacts, ancient inscriptions, and coins from the Lycian civilization. Additionally, visitors can explore remains of the ancient harbor, agora, water cisterns, a Byzantine-era church, and other religious structures.
