Patara Ancient City is a historical treasure considered one of the most important cities of the Lycian civilization. Due to its location on the Mediterranean coast, Patara remained a significant port city for centuries and also held the title of the capital of the Lycian League. One of the most notable structures in Patara is the Lycian League Assembly Building. Recognized as the world’s first known democratic parliamentary building, this structure served as the administrative center of the Lycian League. Restored in 2010, the assembly building is among the most significant ruins shedding light on Patara’s political history. Additionally, the ancient city is home to a grand theater, originally built during the Hellenistic period and later expanded during the Roman era. With a capacity of approximately five thousand spectators, this theater hosted artistic and cultural events in antiquity.
Among the notable structures in the ancient city is the Victory Arch from the Roman Empire period. Also known as theArch of Mettius Modestus, this structure serves as the entrance gate to Patara. Another remarkable symbol of the city is thePatara Lighthouse, commissioned by Roman Emperor Nero, which is considered one of the oldest lighthouses in the world.
