Phaselis Ancient City is an ancient settlement located in the historical Lycia region, in present-day Kemer district of Antalya. It offers a fascinating blend of nature and history. Due to its strategic geographical location, Phaselis Ancient City was founded by the Rhodians in the 7th century BC. Covering an area of 28.8 hectares, Phaselis has been influenced by various civilizations throughout history, including the Persians, Greeks, and Romans.
Phaselis provides an unforgettable experience with its unique natural beauty, stunning beaches, and historical ruins. The most striking features of Phaselis include its main street, theater, agora (marketplace), baths, and aqueducts. The main street connects the city's two important harbors.
Near the entrance of the site, on the right side, you can see the city's old walls dating back to the 3rd century BC and the remains of foundations that might have belonged to a temple or a monumental tomb. The slope behind the North Harbor served as a necropolis. The most monumental structure that has survived to this day is the magnificent aqueducts, built during the Roman period to bring water from the source located on the northern hill. These aqueducts allowed water to be transported over long distances and distributed throughout the city via pipes and channels.
Phaselis, which has hosted many civilizations, showcases the richness of history and cultural heritage. A visit to Phaselis Ancient City offers an exciting journey into the city's rich past and allows visitors to trace the footprints of the ancient world.
One of the most significant structures in Phaselis is the theater, which could accommodate approximately 1,500 spectators. It was used for various performances and events during ancient times, offering a glimpse into the architectural and cultural aspects of the period.
The Agora and marketplace were not only commercial hubs but also venues for religious and social ceremonies. During your visit to the Agora and marketplace, you will come across colonnaded galleries, fountains, temples, and public buildings that contribute to your historical journey.
Phaselis Ancient City is home to numerous temples of historical significance. A visit to these temples provides insight into the beliefs and rituals of the period. Among the temples dedicated to gods and goddesses are those of Athena, Dionysus, and Aphrodite.
