Selge Ancient City Antalya

Selge Ancient City is an important ancient settlement located in Altınkaya (Zerk) Neighborhood of Manavgat, Antalya, on the southern slopes of the Taurus Mountains, at an altitude of approximately 950 meters above sea level.

The foundation ofSelge dates back to the late 2nd millennium BC. According to the historian Strabo, the city was founded following the Dorian migrations after the Trojan War. As a significant mountain city of Pisidia, Selge was successively under the rule of the Lydians, Persians, Alexander the Great, and Romans. The city reached its peak during the Roman period, with a population estimated to have reached 20,000 people.

One of the must-see landmarks in Selge Ancient City is its massive theater, which was expanded in the 3rd century AD and could accommodate 9,000 spectators. This is one of the best-preserved structures in the city. The Temples of Zeus and Artemis, built during the Roman period, provide insights into the religious life of Selge's inhabitants. The sports and educational areas in the city highlight the importance of sports and education, even in ancient times.

To the north of the city, at the foothills of the mountains, lies the cemetery area, reflecting the burial traditions of ancient civilizations. Along the road to Selge, you will encounter fascinating rock formations known as "Adam Kayalar" (Man Rocks), where you can take a walk and explore the mesmerizing beauty of nature.
