Simena Ancient City Antalya

Simena Ancient City is a historic Lycian city, known today as Kaleköy, located between the Kaş and Demre districts of Antalya. It is situated on a peninsula surrounded by the sea, directly across from Kekova Island. Simena is one of the few settlements in Turkey that can only be accessed by sea.

The history of the city dates back to the 4th century BC. Simena was known as a member of a federation within the Lycian League, led by Aperlai, along with Apollonia and Isinda. Due to earthquakes in ancient times, part of the city became submerged, and today, stairs, Lycian-style sarcophagi, and building ruins can be seen underwater along the shore.

One of Simena’s most remarkable structures is its fortress, reflecting the strategic importance of the city. The fortress, which was also used during the Middle Ages, offers visitors breathtaking views of Kekova and its surroundings. Inside the fortress, there is a small theater or bouleuterion, which was carved into the rock and has survived to the present day.

Access to Simena Ancient City is usually provided by boats departing from Üçağız Village. Additionally, boat tours from Kaş or Demre also offer access to the area. There is no direct land route, but visitors can reach Kaleköy by walking from Üçağız or traveling by sea.
