Termessos Ancient City Antalya

Termessos Ancient City is an important ancient city founded by the Solymians, descendants of the Luwians, one of Anatolia's oldest peoples. It is located in the valley between the peaks of Solymos Mountain, which is now called Güllük, in the southwestern part of the Pisidia region, known as Milyas.

The city's historical entrance to the stage began when Alexander the Great besieged the city in 333 BC, but the Termessians made a strong defense and refused to surrender the city. However, the Termessians successfully defended the city with the advantage provided by the mountainous terrain and pushed Alexander back. This event earned Termessos the reputation of being the "unconquerable city." It is one of the most striking ancient sites preserved in the forest, located within the national park of the same name.

One of the prominent structures of Termessos Ancient City is the theater. It is the most impressive structure of Termessos. This ancient theater, with a capacity of approximately 4,200 people, is built on the summit of Güllük Mountain and offers a magnificent view where you can see both the sea and the mountains. The second major structure is the agora, the commercial and social center of the city, which spreads over a large area. Surrounded by columns, this area was the meeting point of the public in ancient times. Lastly, the tombs carved into the mountain slopes of Termessos are quite remarkable. Especially the Tomb of Alketas, belonging to an important military leader of the Hellenistic period, has an impressive structure.
