The Aspendos Aqueducts Antalya

The Aspendos Aqueducts, located in the Serik district of Antalya, are considered one of the greatest engineering projects of the ancient world. Built to transport water to the ancient city of Aspendos, these aqueducts showcase the advanced engineering techniques of the Roman era. Remaining largely intact to this day, this massive water structure is just as impressive a historical legacy as the Aspendos Theater.

Aspendos was one of the most important cities in the Pamphylia region and experienced significant growth during the Roman period. To meet the city's demand for clean water, a vast aqueduct system was constructed during the reign of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD).

At the time, long-distance aqueducts and channels were built to carry water from the nearby mountains to Aspendos. This system spanned approximately 15 km, forming a sophisticated water supply network.

There is also an interesting legend associated with the Aspendos Aqueducts. According to the story, the King of Aspendos announced that he would marry his daughter to the architect who built the city's greatest masterpiece. Competing for this honor were Zenon, the builder of the Aspendos Theater, and another engineer who constructed the aqueducts. The king’s daughter fell in love with the aqueduct builder, but the king was more impressed by the theater and chose Zenon. Heartbroken by this decision, the aqueduct builder took his own life.
