Trysa Ancient City Antalya

With its unique location, mystical atmosphere, and mythological reliefs, this ancient city is one of the most significant pieces of Lycian history. Trysa is one of Anatolia's hidden treasures, a place not often heard of but truly mesmerizing once discovered.

In the 2nd century BC, Trysa was one of Lycia's major commercial and cultural centers, particularly renowned for its mythological reliefs and tomb structures. The city dates back to at least the 4th century BC. While it is not frequently mentioned in historical sources, it is known to have been an important settlement within the Lycian League. On ancient coins, the city's name appears as "TP," suggesting that Trysa may have been an independent city.

One of Trysa’s most remarkable structures is the Heroon Monument, originally built as a tomb for a local ruler or king but later becoming a symbol of the city. The outer surfaces of the monument are adorned with reliefs depicting scenes from the Iliad and Odyssey, Amazon warrior battles, and various figures from Ancient Greek mythology.

Trysa was constructed with a strong defensive system, and today, large sections of the city walls are still standing. The city is situated 550 meters above sea level, offering a panoramic view over the vast plains below. Lycia was famous for its rock-cut sarcophagi, and Trysa also features intricately carved tombs decorated with reliefs.
