Lyrboton Kome Ancient City Antalya
Lyrboton Kome Ancient City is an important ancient settlement located on a mountainous hill in Varsak Neighborhood, Kepez district of Antalya, with a history of approximately 2,200 years. This ancient city, which was continuously inhabited from the Hellenistic Period to the Middle Ages, is particularly known for its olive oil production. Lyrboton Kome, a major olive oil production village affiliated with the ancient city of Perge, is also referred to in ancient sources as "Elai Baris" (Oil Farm).
The story of the ancient city begins with a priestess named Arete, the owner of the settlement, who built a tower dedicated to Emperor Domitian and the Artemis of Perge. With this tower, Arete organized the olive oil production settlement and institutionalized production by establishing an olive foundation. This foundation continued with Arete’s daughter Kille and her grandson Mouas.
In Lyrboton Kome, there are more than 100 olive oil workshops, houses, baths, churches, and over 80 tombs, most of which belong to the Roman and Byzantine periods. These structures indicate that the city was one of the largest olive oil production centers of its time. According to inscriptions, while the Pamphylia region was a leading center in olive oil export, Lyrboton Kome was one of the most comprehensive and professional production settlements.
As a result of excavation and restoration works initiated in 2015, Lyrboton Kome Ancient City was organized as an archaeological park and opened to visitors in 2018. These works were carried out in cooperation with Kepez Municipality, Antalya Museum, and Akdeniz University.
